Book Review ~ Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz

From the New York Times bestselling author of Moriarty and Trigger Mortis, this fiendishly brilliant, riveting thriller weaves a classic whodunit worthy of Agatha Christie into a chilling, ingeniously original modern-day mystery.

When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway’s latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the bestselling crime writer for years, she’s intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan’s traditional formula has proved hugely successful. So successful that Susan must continue to put up with his troubling behavior if she wants to keep her job.

Conway’s latest tale has Atticus Pünd investigating a murder at Pye Hall, a local manor house. Yes, there are dead bodies and a host of intriguing suspects, but the more Susan reads, the more she’s convinced that there is another story hidden in the pages of the manuscript: one of real-life jealousy, greed, ruthless ambition, and murder.

Masterful, clever, and relentlessly suspenseful, Magpie Murders is a deviously dark take on vintage English crime fiction in which the reader becomes the detective.

When book editor, Susan Ryeland receives the latest draft titled Magpie Murders from well-known mystery author Alan Conway, she never thought that a story would consume her life as much as this one did.

“….how he had managed to enter my world before the thought occurred to me that maybe it was I who had entered his.”

Magpie Murders was a classic whodunnit novel starring Detective Atticus Pünd and his trusty personal assistant James Fraser.  As the two investigate two deaths – one that appeared to be accidental and another one that was indeed not an accident and extremely gruesome *shivers*, Pünd and Fraser begin tracing the clues to uncover the murderer.  In this small village, everyone appears to have a motive, so Pünd and Fraser have their work cut out for them.

Susan was truly enjoying this latest mystery novel, but when she got to the end of the manuscript, she discovers that the last few chapters appear to have been left out, leaving off in a major cliffhanger.  Left with the question on who the heck killed Magnus Pye, Susan goes to work the next morning only to discover that Alan Conway is dead – an apparent suicide and the last chapters of the Magpie Murders is missing.  So many questions, and so few answers……

Determined to find the missing chapters and have some closure on the mystery that was handed to her, Susan is determined not only find the missing work, but finds herself playing detective in a true-life mystery.  As Susan continues her quest, she finds that Conway’s novels incorporated hints to his real life embedded throughout.  Using these clues, she finds out more than she ever wanted to know and quite possibly will get herself killed in the process.  Will Susan find the missing chapters and will she finally find out who the killer is in Magpie Murders and will she uncover whether Conway was murdered or was it simply a case of clumsiness?  Well, my dear reader, it is up to you to unravel the clues and find the truth.

Magpie Murders is quite simply a brilliant story.  It’s a murder mystery inside a murder mystery.  With clues incorporated throughout, it really makes the reader think about the words they are reading and try to unravel the mystery (or two).  For this reader, I had no idea of either outcome until the very end, and in my opinion, that is what makes a good murder mystery – one that keeps you guessing right until the last few chapters are read.  With an intriguing cast of characters and storylines intermingle effortlessly, Magpie Murders is a captivating and enthralling novel that will keep the reader engaged throughout.  This novel is truly a must read for any fan of murder mysteries and if you are an Agatha Christie fan, then you will truly be delighted in this story.

Is the story within Magpie Murders life imitating art or art imitating life?  You be the call……..

New Release & Giveaway ~ So Wicked (Bad Behavior Series Book 3) by Melissa Marino

SO WICKED
Bad Behavior Series Book 3
by Melissa Marino
(May 7, 2017; Forever Yours eBook; $3.99;)

Fate has a wicked sense of humor.

Alexis's new life was made up of two things: baking and hiding the details of her old life in Chicago. The first allowed her to finally find some happiness. And the second is about to be destroyed by a man who knows all her secrets.

Marshall Rawlins was prepared to do anything when he moved cross-country to launch an upscale cocktail bar---anything except work with Alexis, his best friend and business partner's ex-wife. Adding Alexis's boozy-baked goods to his menu would be a major feat for his bar. But striking a deal means getting in bed with the enemy.

Battling between distrust and desire, Alexis and Marshall give in to a passionate, forbidden affair. They know if they're discovered the consequences would be bad---it's just hard to remember that when being together feels so, so good.

“Al?” he muttered.
And then it wasn’t about what was right or wrong, or needing or wanting.
It was about me.
It was about him.
Us.
I rotated my head to bring my eyes back to his.
And then there was nothing else to say.
No more questions.
No more answers.
His lips touched mine, so tentative at first to gauge if I would kiss him back. I did, not because I wanted to, but because I needed to. We sighed against each other’s lips as heat rose all around us. One kiss, and we retreated only slightly, glancing into each other’s eyes for reassurance, before our mouths, our lips, were back where we both wanted them to be.
On each other.
My hands wrapped around his neck to bring him even closer, as I was backed up into my car. His body pressed against mine, and with no place for me to run to, I melted. Our lips parted simultaneously, our tongues meeting together with mutual moans. His hands slipped around the small space behind me, gripping the fabric at the back of my uniform dress in his fists, before releasing and moving them up and down.
I tasted what was left of my cupcake creation on his tongue, the hint of bourbon and chocolate, and it made something move inside me.
All I could think was this wasn’t just a good kiss. This was an amazing kiss—a kiss that I’d remember. It wasn’t crazed or rushed, but it wasn’t tentative. It was desire and longing coming together in a movie-worthy kiss sequence.
He moved. I moved. Together. Perfectly.
Cars passed by, alarms went off, and the conversations from people walking down the street behind us, going about their lives like they had no idea the world was imploding, were all there.
But I heard nothing.
It was only his hands in my hair, his mouth on my neck, and his panting breath against my skin. My fingers dug into his hair, yanking him closer, but with no room for him to move, he nudged my legs open with his knee and stepped in between them.
He paused for a moment and I startled.
I asked, “Is this okay?” as I continued to stare at his lips.
We were out in the open, outside the bar, for all to see. Any of his employees or people who knew me could’ve seen.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
A question with a question, and there was no right answer. Logic and reason would bring me to one direction. His pleading eyes that my own had drifted to would lead me to another.
“Yes,” I whispered.
I wanted more. I wanted him.
All of him.
I wanted his words against my lips and his hands on my bare skin. I wanted to trace the tip of my tongue across every one of his tattoos and know their story. I wanted us to kiss all the bad memories away and remember how good it was to be wanted.
And as I looked at him straight on, feeling him hard against my leg, I knew he wanted the same.

A lost ancient civilization and the tomb of a legendary king lie buried beneath centuries of ash on the volcanic planet Thror, but that’s not the only reason sixteen-year-old Carter has tricked her Archaeology of Outer Space class into coming here. Her best friend Conrad has just disappeared on a trip to Thror, leaving behind little more than a broken vintage camera. The strange and disturbing photographs she manages to extract make her suspect Conrad’s disappearance is somehow connected to the hidden tomb of the last king of Thror.
Unfortunately, the ludicrously over-friendly ‘Furry Giants’ who have taken over the planet’s barren surface would rather offer her cheap souvenirs than answers, and the local officials insist they have no record of Conrad’s existence. Inspired by fear for Conrad’s life and the chance to make the greatest archaeological discovery of the century, Carter and her friends follow Conrad’s footsteps deep into the mountains of Thror’s forbidden Black Zone and launch an illicit excavation. Coded messages, stunning ancient ruins, and clues left by Conrad himself begin to surface as the young archaeologists fall victim to an alarming series of accidents staged by the increasingly hostile Furry Giants. Piecing together a history of dictatorship, terrorism and disguise, Carter glimpses the horrors beyond Thror’s flamboyant façade and startling revelations about the friend she thought she knew. The masks of Thror hide devastating secrets, and the golden tomb buried deep in the frozen core may claim the lives of everyone she loves.

Audio Book Review and Tour ~ The Good Spy Dies Twice (The Bullseye Series #1) written and read by Mark Hosack

The Good Spy Dies Twice
Author: Mark Hosack
Narrator: Mark Hosack
Length: 10h 19m
Publisher: Wide Awake Audio⎮2017
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Release date: Jan. 19, 2017

Jake Boxer, investigative journalist and host of the conspiratorial news show Bullseye, is in serious trouble. Not only is his soundman murdered by Russian intelligence agents while reporting on a secretive New World Order, but his network cancels his show, leaving Jake humiliated and spiraling into a deep dark depression.
Years later, a condemned murderer, who claims he was abandoned by the CIA, and who starred in an early episode of Bullseye, is finally executed for killing two supposed Soviet spies back in the 1970’s.
Jake Boxer, still trying to piece his life back together, is on his honeymoon in a posh ski resort in the Alaskan mountains when he gets word of the inmate’s execution . . . and the old killer’s final words: “The good spy dies twice.”
Those five words, seemingly meant for Jake, draw the ex-reporter from his forced retirement and into a complex and deadly global conspiracy involving his newlywed wife, the secretive New World Order, and the hotel’s hundred or so “guests.”
Everyone is a suspect.
Described as James Bond in a Stephen King novel, THE GOOD SPY DIES TWICE is the explosive first book in the Bullseye Series. Part spy thriller, part whodunit, this fast-paced novel introduces an exciting new hero, the intrepid, conspiratorial journalist, Jake Boxer.

In this first installment of the Bullseye series, we are introduced to Jake Boxer, an investigative journalist and host for a very controversial news show called Bullseye.  When his soundman and best friend is found murdered while on an investigation concerning a secret group, Bullseye gets cancelled.  Bullseye was Jake's livelihood, so without any clear direction and his dream job nixed, he spirals into a deep depression.  Fast forward a few years, and we find Jake newly married and on his honeymoon with the love of his life. This honeymoon does not go as planned though as the events from the past collide with the present and Jake must find who is behind the secretive group and a killer.

The Good Spy Dies Twice is filled with tense action that held me in its grasp right from the beginning and was impossible to put down. Mr. Hosack’s uncanny ability to create a plot that is both engaging and thrilling kept my interest throughout – needing to know what would happen next.  This well written, fast paced thriller is raw, gritty and suspenseful with extreme amounts of action and solid, well-developed characters.

I was a bit leery to listen to this audio book due to it being narrated by the author himself.  Sometimes authors just need to the leave performance of their book in the capable hands of professional narrators and just concentrate on the writing.  My thinking though was quite wrong in this instance – a whole lot of wrong.  Mark Hosack narrated this book outstandingly.  His voice is crisp and concise, with pacing that was perfect.  Not only was the narration top notch, each chapter begins with sound effects that not only complement the story but in my opinion adds a level of uniqueness that sets this audio book apart.

Overall, if you love action packed thrillers then you don’t need to look any further than The Good Spy Dies Twice.   Mr. Hosack is a masterful story teller and amazing narrator who has created a thrilling story that is filled with just enough twists and turns to make your head spin. This was a great start to the series and I can’t wait for the next installment.

Story – 4 stars
Performance – 5 stars
Overall – 4.5 stars

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
