~Excerpt~

My darling daughter, Chloe. She never saw any of this coming.

For months, I’ve wanted to warn her—but it would break all the rules of the Prophecy. I hesitate to think about the horrors awaiting her over the next year.

None of them have the tiniest clue.

In life, I was unable to make my young daughter understand her gift.

In death, I’m sworn by the laws of the Prophecy to not interfere.

It’s been torture watching over my family without offering guidance.

Tonight, however, the rules have changed.

But why?

I was yanked from the after-life—and thrown into the land-of-the-living.

An earthbound spirit.

Unseen.

Unheard.

And in a manner of speaking, undead.

Something happened to Chloe tonight, but I no longer have the ability to know the details. The only thing I’m able to do is stand by and watch as three strangers surround her. A man and woman in their fifties, and a boy around Chloe’s age.

The adults hover over her, but don’t seem concerned. The boy on the other hand looks upset. He must be a friend of Chloe’s.

“She’s moving. I think she’s waking up,” says the shorthaired woman with unflattering scarlet lipstick.

The husky man leans forward, taking a closer look. Checking her pulse. “I think you’re right. Xander, go get the doctor.” He glances at the adorable boy with sun-kissed blonde hair. “Now!”

“Fine!” Xander shouts, storming out the door in annoyance.

“Chloe, are you awake?” The man asks, gently rubbing her hand.

She stirs, struggling to open her eyes against the harsh fluorescents. “What? Wh. . .where am I?”

“You’re okay, Chloe. We brought you to your room.” The woman says, tenderly moving stray hairs from my daughter’s glistening forehead.

“Mrs. Farnsworth?”

The strange woman smiles. “Kate. Please.”

“Oh. I’m sorry. Kate.” Chloe turns her head towards the man. “Governor? I’m so embarrassed. What happened?”

Governor? Of course. I forgot she’s doing an internship at his office.

“Please, Chloe. There’s no need to be embarrassed. If anything, it’s actually me who should be embarrassed for you not eating something all day.” He turns to glare at Xander as he walks through the door with a hunkered over gentleman in outdated green tweed. “My nephew must be a real slave-driver.”

Chloe glances towards Xander, a blush improving her ashen complexion. “Oh, not at all. We ate lunch. I think my nerves just got to me with meeting you and your wife. Talk about first impressions.” She winces, looking to everyone in the room apologetically.

Poor Chloe. I can only imagine how mortified she must be, always conducting herself beyond reproach.

The Governor laughs. “Don’t be silly. I’m flattered you were so nervous.”

Chloe sits up, swinging her legs over the edge of the expansive, elegant bed. “I’m sure I’ll laugh about it. Eventually.”

The Governor turns to Kate. “I think we’re ready for dinner now.” He looks back to Chloe. “Sound good?”

“That sounds great. I’m suddenly famished.” She rubs her flat stomach, sliding off the bed to gain a wobbly footing.

“Easy does it,” says Kate. “Let me help you. I can’t have you falling again, or your family will never forgive us.”

Chloe giggles, a familiar and heartwarming sound I remember from her childhood. “I’m okay. Honest.”

“Well, better to be safe than sorry.” Kate smiles demurely. “Xander, would you please take Chloe’s arm and see that she gets downstairs safely?” She steps aside, her nephew doing her bidding. “I’m sure you’d much rather Xander rescue you. He’s much easier on the eyes than I am.”

Xander reaches for Chloe’s arm, crimson spreading across both their faces. But Chloe tries to hide it.

About the Author

Brandi lives in central Pennsylvania with her fur-ball cats (Onyx and Klepto), where she spends most of her time attached to her laptops, reading books, appeasing her sweet tooth, and watching TV for motivation.

Growing up in a haunted house inspired Brandi’s fascination with the paranormal, so it only made sense that she’d write Urban Fantasy books for both teens and adults.

Brandi hasn’t been lucky enough to meet her soul mate (yet), so she writes paranormal tales of those who have. Her stories combine magical elements with real-life issues, strong female characters, semi-old fashioned men and family values, woven together and told from an emotional, first-person perspective.
