BLURB
“Happy Birthday, Charlie Scott...”

This is definitely not how Charlie thought she'd be spending her nineteenth birthday; bunking with her fugitive lover in a cheap hotel room. But he's got a surprise for her...

Blue knows two things: he's the luckiest guy in the world, and she'd be better off if she never met him. He blames himself for the life she was forced to leave behind, but tonight he's planned her a birthday party that she'll never forget.

With one foot on the pedal, it's only a matter of time before they find themselves on the run again. But for now, even if it's only for one night, they'll set everything else aside and party amongst a sea of neon lights.

“Everything can change in just one night...”

SNEAK PEAK AT FIRST PAGE
Every night is a dance through a sea of neon lights. When the sun goes into hiding, it's always the same. But with every passing moon, something changes. Like I'm reaching out for home and every tick of the clock pulls me further from it. If I go any further, I may never find my way back. But maybe that's the point. I'm not supposed to. Every time I look into the night sky, and see that familiar swirl of neon whiplash, I imagine it's a road. And when I'm walking on the colorful ribbons that circle the sky, I know there's no looking back...

EXCERPT
One Month Ago
There's a warmth in the air, the kind of intangible breeze that threatens to choke you if you're not prepared. An unexpected spike in temperature that signals the changing weather, like the eye of the storm when everything is calm. You don't know when or how, but something's coming.

We stand on opposite sides of his Jeep, leaning against the chipped hood as we take small bites of overcooked hamburgers purchased on a budget at some local fast-food eatery. I'm not hungry, but Blue insisted I eat, promising me that the knots in my stomach were nothing more than phantom ghosts that would go away with the passing of time.

I don't believe him.

Five-hundred miles out and the only thing that's seemed to change is my level of confidence that I did the right thing. It began sky-high, like hitting the peak of a roller coaster. I did it for love and that could never be the wrong choice. But now, it's damn near close to the bottom, when the ride, depending on age, either jerks or careens to a slow stop.
Blue takes a bite out of his cheeseburger and sits it down on a messy foil wrapper. The way he pushes the food to the back of his mouth warns me that he's about to speak. “Who do you wanna be?”

Unsure if the question is some sort of game, or deep philosophical question, I just shrug and take another bite.

“You can't be Charlie,” he says, his eyes locked with mine, full of serious intent. “Not right now, anyway.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I mean you have to become someone else and leave everything else behind. To me, you'll always be Charlie, the most beautiful, amazing girl in all the world. But to everyone else, you have to be someone else.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
K.B. Nelson
I grew up on a farm in Ohio, but that's not very interesting, is it? When I'm not writing you can find me doing one of two things; getting lost on highways or getting lost in the lives of fictional characters. If my heart had two feet, one foot would be in romance and the other solidly in geekdom. I hope you'll all follow me on my journey through this carnival they call life. I promise there will be a happy ending.
