What
if the next new drug was you? Raleigh’s body produces a drug that could define
the future of medicine if the dangerous world surrounding it doesn't kill her
first.
Eighteen-year
old Raleigh Groves can sense disease in others and is suffering from her own
unexplained illness as well. After years and dozens of doctor visits, she has
given up hope of ever finding a cure, let alone a diagnosis. Then she meets a
man who explains that her talent and curse are linked. Her body produces a
drug, Lucidin, which allows her to sense others. She’s rare, and the drug she
makes is coveted.
Rho
has spent the last few years on the run. The Lucidin that is racing through his
system makes him a target. Surrounded by addicts and dealers on one side and
scientists and doctors on the other, he has to rely on his wits and his team to
stay one step ahead. So far he has stayed afloat, but some of his brothers
haven’t been as lucky.
As
Rho and Raleigh collide they must face the perilous world of Lucidin together.
Nothing is black-and-white and Raleigh must decide where her alliances lie.
Sometimes the hardest heart to sense is your own.

Raleigh Groves has suffered for years from an unexplained
illness that causes her to blackout, usually at the worst possible times. She also has a knack of knowing other peoples
ailments, from asthma to cancer and everything in between. She finally meets a man who explains that her
body produces a drug called Lucidin. This drug, Lucidin is coveted by the
medical profession as well as drug dealers and addicts. Along
the way, Raleigh meets a cute boy named Rho.
Rho has been on the run because of the Lucidin that runs through his system. Although Raleigh has been told otherwise, Rho
convinces her that he is one of the good guys and she is being fed a bunch of
lies. But who should Raleigh trust?
The
Designed for the most part was a thrilling and exciting
read. I had a difficult time knowing who
to trust as one minute, the scientists seemed to be the good guys and the
Designed the bad guys and the next minute vice versa. I was still on the fence on who to trust even
as I read the last page of the first installment of this series. The plot was well-written and the story for
the most part flowed smoothly. There is a
lot of medical jargon, so fans of medical science/fiction thrillers will
probably enjoy this story. This is a
fairly ‘clean’ novel as there aren’t a lot of sexual moments or swearing. For
those who might have an issue, there is a small part dealing with an
alternative lifestyle – nothing graphic – but I just needed to throw it out
there as a warning for others that like to stay clear of books with this subject.
Overall, this was a really good solid start to
what appears will be a thrilling series.
