If she'd let him in,
he'd be the man of her dreams.
As a newly single mother, Carrie Farmer isn’t quite ready to jump back into the dating pool in Ardent Springs—especially since her last marriage was such a disaster. But if anyone could entice her to wade in a bit, it would be her hunky neighbor, Noah Winchester. He’s the perfect man: strong, protective, and smoking hot. But her eyes have deceived her before, and she’s no longer willing to hand over her heart so easily.

After completing several tours in the Middle East, Noah returns to his hometown a very different man. The former soldier’s plan to rest and relax is soon waylaid by the intriguing woman next door and her heart-stealing little girl. Something—or someone—put shadows in Carrie’s lovely eyes, and he’s determined to clear them away. But when hidden demons can no longer be ignored, the couple gets a reminder from an unexpected source that love truly can conquer all.
Noah was impressed. The little secretary—office manager, he corrected himself—knew her stuff.
“As you can see, the additions will require the most work, while the rest is predominantly cosmetic. Of course, the camp is forty years old, so there could be unforeseen issues, but we’re optimistic that the job will go smoothly once we get started.”
“That’s the first rookie comment I’ve heard you make,” he said. “No construction job, especially one on anything this old, goes smoothly.”
Carrie appeared to be fighting for patience. “I prefer to be optimistic.”
He wondered if she was this contrary with everyone or just him.
“So what’s your stake in this?” he asked.
“Excuse me?” she said, stepping through a cobweb that would have sent men bigger than Noah squealing from the room.
Dodging the silk threads, he tested the sturdiness of a wall to find it detached at the bottom. Not a good sign.
“Why a women’s shelter? Why not a kids’ camp or something?”
“The area needs a shelter,” she said, stopping near the entrance. “There are women being abused who have nowhere to go.”
Noah didn’t realize that domestic violence had become an issue in his hometown.
“Really?” he said. “In Ardent Springs?”
“Do you think men only beat their wives in big cities?” she asked, the color high in her cheeks. “It happens everywhere, and it’s happening here.”
Holding up his hands in surrender, he said, “No need to get so testy. Any man who hits a woman deserves to have his head knocked off. I’m with you. I just didn’t realize we had that kind of a problem around here.”
To his surprise, Carrie relaxed. “You don’t believe in hitting a woman?”
What kind of a question was that? “Hell no, I’d never hit a woman. What kind of a guy do you think I am?”
“Women fall for men all the time who say that. A few months later, they’re putting ice on a black eye.”
This chick had clearly met some serious assholes before Patch.
“Real men don’t beat women. Period.”
“Even if the woman deserves it?” she asked, as if testing him.
“Never,” he said. “Not even if she swings first.”
Satisfied with his answer, Carrie smiled and her entire face changed. In an instant, Noah understood why Patch had been so determined to have her. Blue eyes brightened like polished diamonds, and a tiny dimple appeared in her left cheek. A man could search his whole life and never find such raw beauty and innocence staring back at him. Just looking at her made him feel lighter. More human.
“You should smile like that more often,” he said, leaning against the wall, aware that a goofy grin slit his face.
“I smile at my daughter all the time,” she said, her voice softer.
“Then that’s one lucky little girl.” He nearly asked if he could buy her lunch before he remembered who he was with. Noah shook his head to clear it as he rose off the wall. “Is that the whole tour then?”
Carrie’s smile vanished, as if she too had come back to reality.
“Yes, we’ve gone over everything. The work starts tomorrow, and your crew will arrive by eight.” All business once again, she held out the blueprints. “You can review these overnight if you’d like.”
Taking the cardboard cylinder, he said, “I’ll do that, thanks.” An awkward silence fell between them, and Noah couldn’t believe one smile had reduced him to a nervous schoolboy. “My cell number is in the paperwork back at the office. You can send it to the crew and make sure Mike has it in case he needs me.”
“Of course. And I’ll text you the names of the men you’ll be working with so you know who to expect in the morning.”
Good thing one of them was thinking straight.
“I appreciate that.” Pushing the door open, he let Carrie exit first and caught a whiff of strawberry shampoo. His body reacted as if he’d never smelled a fruit before.
Thankfully, Carrie proceeded to her car without looking back, and Noah crossed to his bike, at which point he realized there was nowhere to put the blueprints.
Tapping on her passenger window, he held up the plans with raised brows. Carrie lowered the window.
“Did we forget something?”
Noah admitted his problem. “I can’t get these home on the bike. Can you bring them over when you get home from work?”
“Oh.” She looked down at her seat as if unsure how to answer. “I guess so.”
“I appreciate it.” He slid the cylinder through the window and stepped back. “I’ll see you later, then.”
Carrie nodded as the window went up. Seconds later, she disappeared down the gravel drive.
“Get your shit together, dickhead,” he said to himself as he reached for his helmet. Seeing Carrie Farmer as anything more than a coworker, neighbor, and his friend’s widow was out of the question. One pretty smile didn’t change anything. Noah never made the same mistake twice, and this wasn’t the time to start.

After dark fell, Laurel rarely used the main stairs if she could avoid it. Even now, she could picture the culprit making his way down the front steps. She straightened her shoulders and slowly descended towards the lower regions of the house.
She entered the kitchen and found the warmth inviting. The faint odor of onions and garlic lingered in the large room, and a gooseberry pie sat in the center of the table. Holding her candle high, she debated. The pie appeared tasty, but she had a desire for pickles. She skirted around the scrubbed table to enter the still-room off the scullery. Raiding the shelves, she collected a crock of pickles and a wedge of cheese.
When she carried her treasures back into the kitchen, a puff of wind rattled against the door, not fully shut. The wind hadn’t pushed the door open, but she noticed it wasn’t on the latch either. Tentatively, she pushed the door closed and clicked the lock into place. Tomorrow she must remind Stokes of his duty to secure all the windows and doors in the establishment. After discovering an unlocked door, her appetite faded. She quickly laid the cheese aside and carried the pickles with her.
The soft ticking of the longcase clock, the darkness of the hall with the flickering of her candle to displace the gloom, and her own shadow kept her company on her way back to her chamber. The faint glow cast by the banked coals in the library grate filtered into the hall from the door left slightly ajar. A shadow crawled out of the crack between the door and the frame piercing the opposite wall before slithering back into the room. Her heart slammed into her ribs. Someone was in the library stealthily moving around. She pinched out the flame on her candle and the smell of candlewax rose up in her face. Her throat closed and she froze in place. Could she make it to the servant’s quarters to raise the alarm?
She whisked around to retrace her steps, but the library door slammed against the wall and the stomp of heavy boots sounded behind her. She broke into a run, reaching the stairs, but in her flight, she dropped the crock filled with pickles. The crockery shattered against the steps and the lid rolled into the darkness rattling to a stop on the stone floor below. The smell of pickle juice exploded in the stairwell a moment before a hard shove sent her downward. She screamed and tumbled forward, spiraling into oblivion.

The second?
Asking her estranged stepbrother for help.

The deaths of his father and his father's new wife mean practically nothing to nineteen-year-old Noah Mack—until the stepsister he barely knows comes begging for help. His response? Pretty much—"Get the hell lost."

But when he can't get his new stepsister out of his mind, he goes to the extreme and gives up the NCAA Wrestling Championship title and his college education.

That's when the real problems begin.

Lorraine and Noah face many obstacles when picking up the pieces of their parents' deaths, but none as big as the secrets they keep.

Lorraine sat on the couch in the back of the room, as far away from the caskets as she could be. She hadn’t yet taken a close look at her mother. That would take courage. Mimi was up front greeting everyone the whole time, but near the end, she came to check on her granddaughter. “Come on, Rainy. I’ll go with you.”
Lorraine shook her head. “Not yet.”
“It’s almost the end of the first session. Come on.”
Not budging from the seat, Lorraine asked, “Where’s Grandpa? I thought he was coming.”
“He is. His flight comes in at five. He has a car picking him up at the airport. He had to take care of the condo and stuff, since it’ll be empty for a while.”
“Empty?”
“Grandpa and I are going to live with you for a while.”
Lorraine was relieved. “Thank God,” she whispered.
Mimi squeezed Lorraine’s knee. “Your mother left you kids to me in her will, and Norah's father left Norah to Tatum if something happened to him, so it makes sense for your grandfather and me to move into your house.”
“Really?”
“Yes. Don't worry. That’s why Grandpa is making arrangements.” Mimi patted Lorraine's knee. “Come on now. Let’s go see your mother.”
Lorraine did not want to see her mother. Not like this. She wanted to remember her the way she was when she was alive, not lying lifeless in a casket in a funeral home. “I really don’t want—”
“Rainy. Come on. Carter did it.”
Lorraine did notice Carter standing at the casket earlier. He stood there almost as still as his mother was lying in the casket. “Where is he now?”
“I don’t know.” Mimi took Lorraine’s hand and walked with her up to the caskets.
Lorraine stopped in front of Brick’s casket first. Her grandmother didn’t protest, but she did let go of Lorraine’s hand and back away. At least her mother and Brick were together. They could comfort each other, she thought as she looked at Brick, but it was getting difficult for Lorraine to breathe. She’d look at Brick and then side-eye her mother. She knew she had to do it, but how? Breathe, Lorraine. Breathe. One side-step to the right, and then she stopped. Inhale, exhale. Inhale. Exhale. If Lorraine didn’t remind herself how to breathe, she’d run out of air. She tried to take another side-step to the right, but before she did, a hand took hers. It wasn’t her grandmother’s; it was too large and not very soft. Noah. He didn’t say a word. He pulled her to the right with a gentle tug and brought her to her mother. Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale. Her heart was pounding, her chest was tight, and it was getting even harder to breathe.
Still holding her hand, Noah took a step forward and knelt on the bench in front of them. Lorraine had no choice but to do the same; he was still holding on to her hand. Noah remained quiet as he exchanged one of his hands for the other, never disconnecting from Lorraine’s. With his right hand now in Lorraine’s, his left hand was free to run slowly up and down her back, a tender touch of encouragement. Lorraine didn’t know why, but this last gesture caused her heart to stop, her breath to halt, and her tears to gush. With her free hand, she covered her mouth as she let out what sounded like a grunt and a yelp.
“Breathe, Lorraine,” Noah whispered right into her ear. “Breathe.”
She wiped at her wet face, then reached out her arm to touch her mother. Her fingers lingered just above her mother’s shoulder, but she couldn’t bring herself to actually touch. The mint blouse. She should have picked the coral one. Maybe she wouldn’t look so pale. More of Lorraine’s tears leaked from her eyes. Noah’s hand was still on her back, and she could feel its heat through to her chest. “How am I going to live without you, Mom?” she whispered. “What am I supposed to do?” Her fingers never actually touching her mother, Lorraine brought her hand back to her face and wiped at the wetness again. “Please don’t leave me, Mom. Please come back. Please. Please come back, Mama,” she barely uttered out loud. She dropped her head onto the wooden stand and sobbed. Noah’s hand came up on her shoulder, while his other hand squeezed hers. She was sobbing so hard that it hurt in her belly. Noah let go of her hand and placed two fingers beneath her chin to raise her head, and without hesitation, Lorraine leaned into Noah and cried into his chest. It hurt so badly that her body felt paralyzed, yet all she wanted to do was scream and run and disappear into thin air. She couldn’t be here anymore. Lorraine didn’t know how to move on from here. The next minute scared her, never mind the next week, or month, or year. Her mother was her everything. How could she exist without her? How could she move on?
After soaking Noah’s shirt with her tears, for she hadn’t an idea how long, Lorraine pulled back only when her grandmother’s hand cupped around her arm. “Rainy,” she whispered.
“Oh, Mimi,” she cried as she got up and hugged her grandmother, a new set of tears pouring from her eyes.
“Come on. We’re going home.”
