I ducked behind the brick wall just before a beer bottle whizzed past my head, exploding into shards of brown glass behind me.
“You have got to be kidding me,” I yelled, and peeked over the wall. He was running. I caught sight of him just as he rounded the far corner of the alley. “Get back here, Gallas!”
I didn’t think he would actually take me seriously enough to listen, so I was stunned at his decision to take off rather than stand his ground and fight. I was maybe 130 lbs. soaking wet, and a head shorter than him to boot. Maybe my reputation was finally preceding me. I smirked at the idea as I bolted over the top of my cover, chasing after him.
At the end of the alley there was a tall barbed wire topped fence. The sound of my boot heels hitting the pavement echoed down the dark street. He must have looked up and saw the fence because he turned, bursting through the back door of the antique shop at the end of the alley. I cussed and backtracked. Thank God I was familiar enough with these back streets to know where most of the entrances would exit. Running to the front I arrived at the glass picture window just as Dave Gallas, parole violator and accused hit and run driver, threw himself into the window from the inside, breaking through in a shower of clear glass. I shrieked and collapsed downward, instinctively covering my head with my arms. He leapt over me and kept running.
Aside from a few small scratches, I didn't feel any severe pain from more wounds.  I wasn't planning for Gallas to be so lucky. Out of breath and patience I stood, watching him run into the night. Not human, I realized. Besides the idiocy of crashing through a plate glass window and taking off without hesitation or harm—which any meth head could manage—his gait gave him away. It looked almost fluid, as if at any moment he’d lean forward and run like an animal on all four limbs.
With a sigh that contained more than a little satisfaction, I drew the small silver whistle from under my red t-shirt, stuffed it between my lips and blew. Instantly Gallas clutched his hands to his ears and pitched to the side, falling into the middle of the street. I kept blowing as I jogged up to him.
Just as I reached him, I heard some commotion and turned my head to see that we were less than a block from Xavier’s seedy club, the Painted Lady. The bouncer at the door was mimicking Gallas’ stop, drop, and roll impression. Two men who were probably vampires rushed out of the club. Of course. It might not affect them the same way, but with their superior hearing, they could at least hear the dog whistle. I stopped blowing as they helped the burly Were to his feet. He pointed to where I stood over Gallas. Shit. I was about to have company. With fangs.

Night. A time of quiet, of peace, of rest, and now, a time of terror.
With an uncontrolled vampire plaguing the city, the Vampire Council of Brenton once again calls on Darien Ritter for help.
Overwhelmed with the issues of a new menagerie and plans for his wedding, Darien still manages to step up and answer the call. The only problem is, he suddenly finds himself a little too… human.

“We are at your call, Master.” A male voice rang out across the room, drawing everyone’s attention.
Darien turned in his chair to see Josh coming through the doorway. His brother was only a step behind.
“I don’t have full control over my powers at the moment.” Darien stood up as he addressed the new vampires. “What I ask of you could be dangerous.”
“We know,” Josh answered as he leaned his hip against the railing that divided the room. “We were wondering when you were going to bring this problem to us.”
“Yes.” Jakob continued down the steps towards Darien. “A few of us have felt the subtle shift in power.” He stopped to look Darien over. “How much of your power do you have left?”
Darien tensed at the question. “Practically none,” he admitted. If he wanted help, he was going to have to be up front and honest with these people.
An evil glint flickered in Jakob’s eyes as he stepped around the end of the couch.
Darien turned to face him.
“So, I could bleed you out, and there’d be nothing you could do about it?” A hint of fangs slipped past Jakob’s lip as he spoke. The cocky smile vanished from his face as Elliot’s hand closed around his neck.
Vicky blinked in surprise. She hadn’t even seen him move.
Darien smiled at him. “Yes,” he admitted. “You could bleed me dry right now, and there would be nothing I could do about it.” He looked pointedly at Elliot’s hand, pressed into Jakob’s throat. “If you managed to survive the night, my death would leave you tied to this inexperienced rogue. And, if he isn’t stopped, the Council will hunt him. They now know he has my powers, and Clara will stop at nothing to destroy him, leaving this kiss masterless.” Reaching out, Darien drew Elliot’s hand away from the stunned vampire. “Who do you think will take you in, then?”
Understanding flickered in Jakob’s eyes. Hurting Darien would be a death sentence for all of them. “Forgive me, My Master.” Jakob dropped to a knee in front of Darien. He raised his hand to his heart and bowed his head.
Darien reached out and touched him on the shoulder. “Remember this.”
Jakob looked up as Darien spoke.

“Just because someone is down, doesn’t mean they don’t have unseen strength.”

CHAPTER FOUR

On the drive home, Melora stopped and bought some wine for the evening. When they got to her house, Spencer barked, greeting them enthusiastically; any trace of his former coolness toward Drew was gone.
Drew and Melora sat on the couch, drinking wine and watching the evening shadows lengthen over the harbor. Lightning played across the thickening clouds in the distance over Wisconsin, creating quiet snakes of brilliance.
“How do you think Demetri knew I was a wolf man?” Drew swirled his wine and took a sniff.
“I have no idea,” Melora said. “He knew stuff no four-year-old should, if you ask me. Kinda spooky. And then there was that thing he said about the plovers, that they would come to nest.”
“I feel sorry for his mom,” Drew said. “That kid’s going to give her a run for her money. I suspect it won’t get any easier for her.”
“Still, he’s a neat kid. I wouldn’t mind having a child like that, even if he made me prematurely gray.” Melora took a sip of her wine.
Her hand was next to Drew’s on the couch and he took it in his own. “Want to get started on that? The children part I mean, not the gray part . . . I could help.”
“Drew!” Melora broke his hold and playfully punched him in the thigh. She knew what was about to happen between them was as inevitable as the approaching storm. It couldn’t NOT happen. That would be an insult to the cosmos. But she couldn’t let him get away with such flippancy.
“Sorry,” he said. “My seduction skills are a little primitive.”
Drew’s face turned serious as he put down his wine on the side table. This time, he took Melora’s hand in both of his, rubbing it as he looked into her eyes. With his voice soft and strained, he began. “Melora, even though we saved the wolves, even though I was finally part of something – the pack – staying with them wasn’t worth it without you. I realized that much too late.”
Tears sprang into Melora’s eyes and she looked down.
“I didn’t choose Lana over you. She just came along with the wolves . . . there’s been so much wasted time, so many excuses.” Drew paused. “That stops now. I apologize for hurting you. I want to be with you, whatever it takes, however long it takes. I won’t waste any more time without you.”
Melora looked back up at him, her eyes brimming. “I’ve missed you so much,” she said. A tear escaped and slid down her cheek. Drew reached up and wiped it with his thumb, his hand cupping her face. Melora put her wine glass on the coffee table. She leaned forward and their lips met.
Their kiss felt like coming home on Christmas morning. Like hot chocolate on a snowy evening. Like tulips in spring. Like jumping into a pile of fall leaves. It began soft and slow, becoming harder and more urgent.
Drew’s hands moved from her face down her body, hugging her to him. Melora responded in kind. He felt so good, so fit and solid -- all man.
After a while, they broke to breathe. Spencer whined from his post next to the couch.
“It’s okay, Spencer,” Melora breathed. “Lay down.”
“Good idea.” Drew leaned over her. Melora laughed and scooched her legs underneath him. They lay on the couch, Melora on her back, Drew on his side, his back against the back of the couch.
“Sorry, Spencer’s not used to people coming here and accosting me,” Melora said.
“Oh no, not accost.” Drew stroked her cheek again. “Just love.”
And they kissed again. Drew’s hand moved from her face to her neck, to the tops of her breasts. “Oh my god, you are soft,” he said.
Melora arched her back in pleasure and then rolled onto her side, facing him, so that her free hand could roam his body. It rested on his butt, kneading the muscles there, roamed up his back, and then was drawn back to his butt. She lifted her leg and laid it atop his, bringing him closer to her.
Dimly, she noticed the sound of thunder. The room darkened as the storm drew near.

There's a whole host of benefits allotted to those, who like myself, possess these very specialized set of skills. One of the benefits is, that afterward, you sleep really good at night and I mean really good.

What?

Well, it's true, it's hard to believe I know, but trust me it's true. Sam, my uncle, sent me to this exotic land that used to smell of frankincense and myrrh. He sent us there, my brothers-in-arms and me, so that we could become proficient in the art of death. We were good at what we did too, because now it only smells of gunpowder, burnt oil, and death. That's a hellofa predicament you've found
yourself in, isn't it?

Well, at least now you know I'm good with a gun and thanks to my Uncle Sam I am also very comfortable with a blade. This ten inch beauty here is a staple, it’s sharp enough to be use as machete. But this one, with the gut hook, is my all
time favorite and I'll show you why here in a minute. Now, I can understand why you broke into my home, these are tough times, and a guys gotta eat I get that. I do.

Maybe I would have let you live if you had simply demanded my money and jewels, but, then again, I was never known for being charitable.
