Book Review ~ Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough

Behind Her Eyes
by Sarah Pinborough

Louise is a single mom, a secretary, stuck in a modern-day rut. On a rare night out, she meets a man in a bar and sparks fly. Though he leaves after they kiss, she’s thrilled she finally connected with someone.

When Louise arrives at work on Monday, she meets her new boss, David. The man from the bar. The very married man from the bar…who says the kiss was a terrible mistake but who still can’t keep his eyes off Louise.

And then Louise bumps into Adele, who’s new to town and in need of a friend, but she also just happens to be married to David. David and Adele look like the picture-perfect husband and wife, but then why is David so controlling, and why is Adele so scared of him?

As Louise is drawn into David and Adele’s orbit, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong, but Louise can’t guess how wrong―and how far a person might go to protect their marriage’s secrets.

As I began Behind Her Eyes, it seemed to be a pretty straightforward story - single, divorced mom, Louise, goes out and meets the man of her dreams, David, only to find out that he is her new boss - oh, and he's married.  Nothing awkward about that, right?  Well, then imagine the new boss' wife, Adele, becoming your new best friend.  As Louise gets to know both David and Adele, she begins to discover that something is just not right in this marriage.  Let me tell you...she has no freaking idea how messed up this relationship is and neither will you until you get to the very end  of this twisted psychological thriller.

The buzz around this book is the ending.  "Why is everyone talking about the ending of Sarah Pinborough's Behind Her Eyes?"  Well, while I won't give the ending away, let me tell you that this thriller deals with lucid dreaming and takes the subject to a whole different level you probably never thought it could go.  Several times I was saying, Wait, what??  as this story progressed.  My thoughts as I finished the book were: That was some crazy a$$ effed up sh*t that I just read.  Seriously, I was stunned and absolutely speechless.  While I didn't throw the book down and scream out loud, I just kept shaking my head at the craziness that I just witnessed.  The ending is seriously messed up...seriously.  The reader will not see it coming - I know I didn't!

Sarah Pinborough is a pure genius.  The way she wrote the book with alternating POV's and throwing it bits of the past really worked well for this story.  Just when you think you have everything figured out, the author throws another twist at you and you really have to rethink everything that you think you know.  Behind Her Eyes is a crafty thriller that will take you into the mind of a truly mentally unstable person and the obsession that touches everyone around.  It's an extremely well-written story kept me engaged and captivated throughout.  It's really too soon to say that this will be one of my top reads of the year, but it's definitely in the running.

If you love to read psychological thrillers then you need to checkout Behind Her Eyes, but be prepared to not get anything done, because this book will control your life and you will not want to put it down until you find out how this insane story ends.
