Book Review ~ Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage

Baby Teeth
by Zoje Stage
Expected publication: July 17th 2018 by St Martin's Press

Sweetness can be deceptive.

Meet Hanna.

She’s the sweet-but-silent angel in the adoring eyes of her Daddy. He’s the only person who understands her, and all Hanna wants is to live happily ever after with him. But Mommy stands in her way, and she’ll try any trick she can think of to get rid of her. Ideally for good.

Meet Suzette.

She loves her daughter, really, but after years of expulsions and strained home schooling, her precarious health and sanity are weakening day by day. As Hanna’s tricks become increasingly sophisticated, and Suzette's husband remains blind to the failing family dynamics, Suzette starts to fear that there’s something seriously wrong, and that maybe home isn’t the best place for their baby girl after all.

Hannah is an adorable looking seven year old who worships her father….she is definitely a daddy’s girl through and through.  However, this sweet looking child has a devious mind and her goal is to get rid of her mother, no matter the cost so that she can have her father all to herself.

This story is told in alternating POV’s between Suzette, the mother, and Hannah, the seven-year old girl.  Hannah chooses not to speak, but her ‘voice’ is loud when it comes to the hatred she has toward her mom.  As a mom myself, I really felt sorry for Suzette. She wanted to love Hannah so much, but it is hard to love evil…..and trust me, Hannah is pure evil.  It was hard for me to connect with Hannah’s character because she seemed older than her young seven years.  It was difficult for me to comprehend that a young child would even contemplate such adult behavior.

While this psychological thriller started out strong, I felt it fizzled out in the middle and the flame totally died out at the end.  I wanted to know more, but the story just ended without any real conclusion and left this reader feeling unsatisfied.

The audio version of this book is narrated by Gabra Zackman and while her voice of Suzette was great, I had a really hard time with her portrayal of Hannah.  I felt as though Hannah was a seventy-year woman instead of a young girl.  Perhaps that is why I could not connect with Hannah, other than the fact that she was a psychopath.  The production quality was great and the narrator spoke clearly and concisely.

Book Review ~ Bring Me Back by B.A. Paris

Bring Me Back
by  B.A. Paris
Published June 19th 2018 by St. Martin's Press

Finn and Layla are young, in love, and on vacation. They’re driving along the highway when Finn decides to stop at a service station to use the restroom. He hops out of the car, locks the doors behind him, and goes inside. When he returns Layla is gone—never to be seen again. That is the story Finn told to the police. But it is not the whole story.

Ten years later Finn is engaged to Layla’s sister, Ellen. Their shared grief over what happened to Layla drew them close and now they intend to remain together. Still, there’s something about Ellen that Finn has never fully understood. His heart wants to believe that she is the one for him...even though a sixth sense tells him not to trust her.

Then, not long before he and Ellen are to be married, Finn gets a phone call. Someone from his past has seen Layla—hiding in plain sight. There are other odd occurrences: Long-lost items from Layla’s past that keep turning up around Finn and Ellen’s house. Emails from strangers who seem to know too much. Secret messages, clues, warnings. If Layla is alive—and on Finn’s trail—what does she want? And how much does she know?

A tour de force of psychological suspense, Bring Me Back will have you questioning everything and everyone until its stunning climax.

Oh gosh...where to begin?  While I did not hate this book, I did not love it either.  My maw maw always told me that if I had nothing nice to say, just to keep my thoughts to myself, and that is what I am going to do with this review…..to a certain point.

The writing itself was good; the problem I had is with the actual story. It started out strong and I was excited to keep on, but as the story progressed, certain things just annoyed me and seem too far-fetched and unbelievable.  But, but, it is fiction you are probably saying….Well yes, that is true, but some things just need to seem believable for me to buy into what you are selling.

My thoughts as I finished Bring Me Back:
·       The story was not as suspenseful as I would have wanted it to be.
·       What did I just read?
·       Finn - (the main character) needed anger management classes – big, intimidating looking men need to tone it down when angry…..they tend to scare the general population.
·       Finn needed a good pair of eyeglasses, because seriously, he must have been blind not to see what was right in front of him.
·       Where was the ‘stunning climax’?

Because life for me is crazy at the moment, I purchased the audio version of this book even though the publisher was kind enough to provide me with an ARC.  The narrators, Kevin Hely and Cathleen McCarron, were what kept this book from entering the dreaded DNF pile in the darkest corner of my room.  Mr. Hely plays the biggest part of this performance with Ms. McCarron playing a smaller role, but each one did an amazing job with what they had to work with.  Kudos to them!

I am giving this story a 2 star rating and the audio performance 4 stars.

For single mom Bobbie Jo Weston, finding a husband is not on her to-do list. She's focused on turning a run-down chicken farm into a Bed & Breakfast. Law of Attraction was everything I expected from the talented Alison Bliss plus so much more.  Right from the very start, this story had me hooked and I found it impossible to put down. I absolutely adored Seth and Bobbie Jo's story so very much.  Funny, sexy, and thoroughly captivating, Law of Attraction has every possible element needed to make this a truly amazing read.

Although this is the third book in the Tangled in Texas series, it can be read as a complete stand-alone.  With exceptional writing and an engaging plot line that flowed seamlessly, Law of Attraction is a book I would highly recommend to any reader of this genre.

Book Review ~ Jorie and the Gold Key A.H. Richardson

Jorie and the Gold Key
by A.H. Richardson

Click HERE to add to Goodreads

When Jorie and Rufus planned another summer of adventuring, they didn’t plan on sharing it with a snooty, stuck-up, bossy 10-year-old Nigel. When the Wizard Grootmonya calls on Jorie to remedy another disaster in Cabrynthius — the theft of the Magic Stones, Jorie grabs the Gold Key and the three children descend to the enchanted land beneath the Tarn. There they find more extraordinary adventures that bring them face to face again with the wicked Lord Fodomalk and his evil butterfly. Their troubles grow as the fiendish dragon not only snatches Nigel, but confines him to a cold dank cell with the illusive Professor Schrinch (yes, he’s still alive and as sneaky as ever). Jorie and Rufus — and the persnickety Nigel — are joined by all their old friends in this rollicking tale of magic, strange impersonations, and hair-raising exploits. They help Master Nigel with his confusion of the world beneath the Tarn and discover strengths in their new friend that even he didn’t know he had. Aside from spurts of jealousy from Rufus and impatience from Jorie, Nigel learns about bravery and friendship as he struggles with belief and enchantment. Follow this feisty threesome back to the evil, dark world of Shyloxia and the beautiful, bright world of Cabrynthius, where live all manner of creatures, naughty and nice. Do they recover the Magic Stones? What does that Gold Key open for them? Do they survive the shadowy world of nasty characters? Do Jorie and Rufus accept Nigel into their world? And what about Chook — that beloved baby dragon? And if you want to know how Jorie and Rufus survived their first summer adventures, pick up your copy of Jorie and the Magic Stones.

Before I begin, I just want to give kudos to the Cover Designer, Jeff Preston, for creating the perfect depiction of Lord Fodomalk’s lair in Shyloxia.  In the first book, Jorie and the Magic Stones, I imagined it to be a dark, uninviting, and dreary world and the cover for Jorie and the Gold Key matched my visualization 100%.

Jorie and the Gold Key was such an enjoyable book to read!  Once again, Ms. Richardson has written an adorable story filled with magical creatures and an action-filled plot that kept me captivated throughout.  With her ability to provide the reader with vibrant imagery and a story line that flowed with ease, truly demonstrates what an incredible story teller Ms. Richardson is.  I found myself deeply engaged in this story, not wanting to put it down even for a second!  I hope that the author continues this series, as I enjoy the adventures and want to read more.

I would highly recommend this book (and series) to young readers who delight in tales of fantasy and know that they will truly enjoy this unique and entertaining story.

Book Review ~ Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough

Behind Her Eyes
by Sarah Pinborough

Louise is a single mom, a secretary, stuck in a modern-day rut. On a rare night out, she meets a man in a bar and sparks fly. Though he leaves after they kiss, she’s thrilled she finally connected with someone.

When Louise arrives at work on Monday, she meets her new boss, David. The man from the bar. The very married man from the bar…who says the kiss was a terrible mistake but who still can’t keep his eyes off Louise.

And then Louise bumps into Adele, who’s new to town and in need of a friend, but she also just happens to be married to David. David and Adele look like the picture-perfect husband and wife, but then why is David so controlling, and why is Adele so scared of him?

As Louise is drawn into David and Adele’s orbit, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong, but Louise can’t guess how wrong―and how far a person might go to protect their marriage’s secrets.

As I began Behind Her Eyes, it seemed to be a pretty straightforward story - single, divorced mom, Louise, goes out and meets the man of her dreams, David, only to find out that he is her new boss - oh, and he's married.  Nothing awkward about that, right?  Well, then imagine the new boss' wife, Adele, becoming your new best friend.  As Louise gets to know both David and Adele, she begins to discover that something is just not right in this marriage.  Let me tell you...she has no freaking idea how messed up this relationship is and neither will you until you get to the very end  of this twisted psychological thriller.

The buzz around this book is the ending.  "Why is everyone talking about the ending of Sarah Pinborough's Behind Her Eyes?"  Well, while I won't give the ending away, let me tell you that this thriller deals with lucid dreaming and takes the subject to a whole different level you probably never thought it could go.  Several times I was saying, Wait, what??  as this story progressed.  My thoughts as I finished the book were: That was some crazy a$$ effed up sh*t that I just read.  Seriously, I was stunned and absolutely speechless.  While I didn't throw the book down and scream out loud, I just kept shaking my head at the craziness that I just witnessed.  The ending is seriously messed up...seriously.  The reader will not see it coming - I know I didn't!

Sarah Pinborough is a pure genius.  The way she wrote the book with alternating POV's and throwing it bits of the past really worked well for this story.  Just when you think you have everything figured out, the author throws another twist at you and you really have to rethink everything that you think you know.  Behind Her Eyes is a crafty thriller that will take you into the mind of a truly mentally unstable person and the obsession that touches everyone around.  It's an extremely well-written story kept me engaged and captivated throughout.  It's really too soon to say that this will be one of my top reads of the year, but it's definitely in the running.

If you love to read psychological thrillers then you need to checkout Behind Her Eyes, but be prepared to not get anything done, because this book will control your life and you will not want to put it down until you find out how this insane story ends.

Book Review ~ Leopard at the Door by Jennifer McVeigh

Leopard at the Door
by Jennifer McVeigh
Expected Publication Date:  January 3, 2017
Published by G.P. Putman’s Sons Books

Set in Kenya against the fading backdrop of the British Empire, a story of self-discovery, betrayal, and an impossible love.

After six years in England, Rachel has returned to Kenya and the farm where she spent her childhood, but the beloved home she’d longed for is much changed. Her father’s new companion—a strange, intolerant woman—has taken over the household. The political climate in the country grows more unsettled by the day and is approaching the boiling point. And looming over them all is the threat of the Mau Mau, a secret society intent on uniting the native Kenyans and overthrowing the whites.

As Rachel struggles to find her place in her home and her country, she initiates a covert relationship, one that will demand from her a gross act of betrayal. One man knows her secret, and he has made it clear how she can buy his silence. But she knows something of her own, something she has never told anyone. And her knowledge brings her power.

Note from the Publisher

Quick Take: LEOPARD AT THE DOOR is at once a historical survey of the Mau Mau Rebellion, a bloody and brutal uprising that the author researched in her travels to remote areas of east Africa, and a story of blossoming love and hope amidst the hostile backdrop of a nation at war. Rachel Fullsmith grew up in Kenya at Kisima, her British parents’ sprawling up country farm. When her mother died suddenly, the twelve-year-old was abruptly sent back to England for a proper boarding school education and a “civilized” life. Six years later and her schooling finished, Rachel boards a ship for Kenya to reunite with her father and her beloved childhood home. But after her arrival Rachel quickly learns that the Kenya of her dreams is slipping away. Her father’s live-in companion, Sara, is a controlling, intolerant woman and the farm has changed dramatically without her mother’s loving hands to manage it. Her distracted father is disturbingly accepting of Sara’s casual cruelty toward Africans who for years have served the family and worked the land. Kenya’s political climate is growing more unsettled by the day, with the Africans pushing back against colonial control. But most frightening of all is the rise of a secret society known as the Mau Mau that is gaining momentum as it works to unite native Kenyans to overthrow the whites. Struggling to carve out a new role in her home and her country, Rachel enters into a secret relationship, a potentially scandalous affair that forces her into a bold act of betrayal. Rachel must decide who she is truly loyal to and realizes that nothing is simple—in love, as in conflict “the lines of right and wrong have blurred.” Her life is in imminent danger and it will take every ounce of courage she has—along with the intervention of those who love her—to survive. Jennifer McVeigh weaves them into a haunting story that exposes the best and worst of human nature. The result is an illuminating tale of self-discovery and a vivid reminder of the resiliency of the human spirit.

Historical Angle: British Kenya’s Mau Mau Rebellion spanned eight deadly years, from 1952 to 1960. Contrary to public perception, just thirty-two European settlers died in the uprising, and another two hundred British soldiers and police were killed. In contrast, over eighteen hundred African civilians were murdered by Mau Mau and a reported twelve thousand Mau Mau rebels died, though the real figure is likely closer to twenty thousand. More than one thousand Kikuyu men were executed for Mau Mau offenses, far more than the 346 convicted murderers. It remains the largest scale state execution in the history of British imperialism.

Leopard at the Door had me captivated from the very moment I opened the book to start reading.  With the author’s beautifully descriptive writing and lyrical prose, I had no problem visualizing the story unfolding before me.   The author did an outstanding job at researching British Kenya’s Mau Mau Rebellion and I applaud her for bringing her readers a very thought-provoking and enlightening story done with a manner of sophistication and exquisiteness which made this a gripping and compelling read.

Jennifer McVeigh is an incredible storyteller and Leopard at the Door shows her talent in an absolutely stunning way and in the process, brings to light a disturbing and horrific conflict that occurred in the past that some readers might not have known about.  This story not only pulled me into Rachel’s life, full of forbidden love, treachery, and horrific loss of life, but also the sadness of bigotry, betrayal, and upheaval which kept me in its grips until the very end.  If you love and enjoy historical novels, then this is a must read.

Book Review ~ The Last Mile by David Baldacci

The Last Mile
Amos Decker Series, Book 2
by David Baldacci
Paperback: 464 pages
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing (September 13, 2016)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1455586463
ISBN-13: 978-1455586462

In his #1 New York Times bestseller Memory Man, David Baldacci introduced the extraordinary detective Amos Decker-the man who can forget nothing. Now, Decker returns in a spectacular new thriller
THE LAST MILE
Convicted murderer Melvin Mars is counting down the last hours before his execution--for the violent killing of his parents twenty years earlier--when he's granted an unexpected reprieve. Another man has confessed to the crime.

Amos Decker, newly hired on an FBI special task force, takes an interest in Mars's case after discovering the striking similarities to his own life: Both men were talented football players with promising careers cut short by tragedy. Both men's families were brutally murdered. And in both cases, another suspect came forward, years after the killing, to confess to the crime. A suspect who may or may not have been telling the truth.

The confession has the potential to make Melvin Mars--guilty or not--a free man. Who wants Mars out of prison? And why now?

But when a member of Decker's team disappears, it becomes clear that something much larger--and more sinister--than just one convicted criminal's life hangs in the balance. Decker will need all of his extraordinary brainpower to stop an innocent man from being executed.

The Last Mile begins with Melvin Mars who is currently on Death Row for supposedly killing his parents.  He has always claimed innocence, but evidence against him proved otherwise.  Twenty years later on the day of his execution, he gets a reprieve as someone else comes forth and confesses that he was in fact the one who killed Mars’ parents. Something just does not seem right though.   Decker wants this case bad because of the similarities between this case and the case of his that has never been solved.  With the help of the FBI, Mars himself, and a special task force, this well-crafted novel provides the reader with an abundance of twists and turns that keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

Amos Decker is perhaps the coolest fictional detective ever.  Due to an accident which ended his NFL career, he has a medical condition that enables him to have perfect recall of everything – which comes in pretty handy in his line of work, but is also a curse because he remembers EVERYTHING and let’s face it, sometimes you just want to forget. In addition to his memory thing, he is funny, unique and totally relatable.

Although The Last Mile is book two in the series, I feel as though it can be read as a stand-alone.  But with that being said, I am definitely going to go back and read Memory Man just for the fact that I love Decker and want to learn more about him.

David Baldacci definitely has an awesome talent of drawing the reader in and keeping them guessing until the very end.  The Last Mile has everything I love in a good mystery – highly captivating, fast-paced, well-written, suspenseful, and a cast of well-developed characters that will keep you wanting to know how the story will end.  An intriguing read that you will not want to put down.
